Astounding walk to see Huddersfield’s Arts and Crafts houses
More than 20 members and guests of Huddersfield Civic Society joined local historian David Griffiths – author of the recent book Huddersfield’s Arts & Crafts Houses: From Edgar Wood to the 1930s – on a delightful guided summer evening walk around our town’s richest area of such housing in the Lindley and upper Birkby.
The walk on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, began at Briarcourt, the beautiful listed building by architect Edgar Wood, and passed many of the fascinating local Arts and Crafts style houses with features described and explained by David.

Entrance had been arranged to several gardens for closer views of houses featured in the book before concluding at the more modern house of Geoff and Maddy Hughes for garden refreshments.
The Society expresses thanks to the owners of all the houses visited and especially to David Griffiths for leading such an excellent, educational and enjoyable summer evening tour.
