Alterations to convert the basement of Britannia buildings into hotel rooms

Comments made on Behalf of Huddersfield Civic Society.

First, to note it says on the application ‘Grade 2’ – it should be pointed out that it is in fact Grade 2* and represents one of the most important buildings in the Huddersfield Town Centre Conservation Area.

We feel consideration should only be given once the missing elements of the Heritage statement are submitted and the changes can be fully assessed from a heritage/listed building point of view.

We would like to note that there are key elements of the external fabric of the existing conversions of Britannia buildings that require attention such as the missing urns/balusters above the parapet. There should be some effort by Kirklees Council to ensure such features are re-instated as part of the conditions applied to any approval for internal changes of use. Such repairs will help support the future maintenance and integrity of the whole structure and ensure recognition its architectural/historic importance.
