This book reveals the homes inspired by pioneering architect Edgar Wood who designed famous Huddersfield mansions Banney Royd and Briarcourt, along with Lindley Clock Tower.

It celebrates some of the town’s best-designed homes from the late 19th and early 20th centuries along with the developers and architects who created them in areas including Lindley, Fixby, Birkby and Fartown.

Edgar Wood (1860-1935) was a huge advocate of  the Arts & Crafts movement devoted to the use of local natural materials, quality craftsmanship and integration with the landscape, often featuring exposed timber, large chimneys and asymmetrical designs.

Less well-known than Edgar are the local architects he influenced and who carried these ideals forward into the 20th century. Leading figures whose work is described in the book include Edgar’s own pupil Dennis Bamford, Willie Cooper – who extended Briarcourt - John Cocking, Oswald White, John Lunn, Clifford Hickson and Norman Culley.
